Its that time of year again.

The Great River Race is an event for traditional and traditional-style boats, powered by a
minimum of four oars or paddles; sliding seats and riggers are now allowed. Each boat must
be coxed and, in keeping with the Watermen’s role as the taxi drivers of the Thames, must
carry a passenger. The fastest boat overall wins the Challenge Trophy of the Company of
Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames.

Entries open on 1st April for the 2024 Great River Race.
On 21st September, over 200 crews and 1500 people will once again take part this 21.6 mile marathon from East London to Richmond.
Competitors will return from all over the world to take part in this unique event, from young novice scouts to hardened coastal rowing veterans determined to beat their previous
records.
Many crews enter in fancy dress to have fun and to enjoy making money for their charities, cheered on by the spectators who watch from London’s famous bridges and landmarks. Last year over 30 charities were supported by crews taking part.
The Great River Race is open to any traditional style boat powered by a minimum of 4 oars or paddles, and carrying a cox and a passenger to emulate the craft of London’s Watermen, the water taxis who carried passengers across the Thames when London bridge was the only alternative.
